Indiana Survives Minnesota’s Late Drama as Two Incredible 60-Yard Field Goals Force Overtime
No. 4 Indiana escaped with a dramatic 23-16 overtime victory over Minnesota on Saturday after an unbelievable finish saw both teams trade 60-yard field goals in the final 19 seconds of regulation.
The defending national champions faced a serious scare at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington as Minnesota came dangerously close to pulling off a major upset in their Big Ten showdown.
Minnesota appeared to have secured a stunning victory when Luke Drzewiecki converted a career-long 60-yard field goal with just 19 seconds remaining, giving the Golden Gophers a 16-13 advantage.
However, Indiana refused to surrender.
With time running out, the Hoosiers responded with an impressive passing play from backup quarterback Grant Wilson to Charlie Becker, who delivered a crucial 33-yard reception to put the team within striking distance.
Kicker Paddy McAteer then produced another extraordinary moment, connecting on a 60-yard field goal as time expired to level the score at 16-16 and force overtime.
The drama continued in overtime as Wilson found Becker with a 25-yard touchdown pass on Indiana’s first offensive play, giving the Hoosiers a 23-16 lead.
Minnesota had an opportunity to respond, but Indiana’s defense delivered when it mattered most, sacking quarterback Drake Lindsey on fourth down to end the contest.
Wilson finished with 156 passing yards and one touchdown after replacing starting quarterback Josh Hoover, who was removed following an injury scare. Becker was outstanding, recording eight receptions for 149 yards and the decisive touchdown.
Despite the victory, Indiana’s performance exposed several offensive concerns that could become significant challenges as the season progresses.
The Hoosiers improved to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in Big Ten play, keeping their national championship ambitions alive.
For Minnesota, the defeat was particularly painful after coming within seconds of a memorable upset.
Indiana found a way to survive, but Minnesota will undoubtedly wonder how a game it nearly won slipped off.
