Update: Steelers beat Saints, 16-10, in Paris
PARIS (AP) — Aaron Rodgers threw for 212 yards and a touchdown, and the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the New Orleans Saints 16-10 on Sunday at Stade de France in the NFL’s first regular-season game played in France. The 42-year-old quarterback’s 4-yard scoring pass to tight end Darnell Washington in the first half was the 540th of his career, moving him past Peyton Manning for third in NFL history . Chris Boswell kicked three field goals for Pittsburgh (5-2), which won its third straight game. The decisive moment came midway through the third quarter. With New Orleans driving for a potential go-ahead score, linebacker Payton Wilson intercepted Saints quarterback Tyler Shough at the 11-yard line and returned it 18 yards. Pittsburgh converted the takeaway into Boswell’s 39-yard field goal and a 16-10 lead it never relinquished .
“We’ve just repped that so many times,” Wilson said. “I trust the guys behind me” .
The Steelers controlled the game on the ground. Jaylen Warren rushed for 101 yards on 18 carries, and Pittsburgh finished with 148 rushing yards while converting 10 of 16 third downs . The defense was equally dominant against the run, limiting New Orleans to just 18 yards on 17 carries. Shough completed 30 of 38 passes for 278 yards with one touchdown and the interception for the Saints (2-5), who have now lost three one-score games this season . New Orleans’ lone touchdown came on a 1-yard pass to Devaughn Vele just before halftime, tying the game at 10-10 .
Saints coach Kellen Moore was blunt about the disparity. “When you have a day like today, 17 runs for 18 yards, it’s going to be hard to win football games doing that,” he said. The game drew an announced crowd of 78,488 to the Stade de France, and Steelers fans made their presence felt with chants of “Here We Go Steelers” ringing through the stadium . The matchup proceeded without incident despite civil unrest across France in the days leading up to kickoff, which had forced both teams to cancel fan events. Rodgers, who also scrambled for a key 8-yard gain on third down late in the fourth quarter, reflected on the milestone victory. “Sometimes you’ve got to suck it up and make a play for your guys,” he said. “I think because I am so much less athletic than I used to be, it actually fires up the guys even more” .
