UNC Basketball Eyes Elite International Recruit
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. North Carolina basketball coach Michael Malone has never been shy about tapping into the international pipeline, and his latest recruiting effort proves that philosophy remains a priority in Chapel Hill. According to a report from Sports Illustrated, the Tar Heels are actively pursuing Matija Lukic, a 17-year-old, 6-foot-9 shooting guard from Serbia who is widely regarded as one of the top international prospects in his class . Lukic is scheduled to embark on an ambitious seven-school tour across the United States beginning November 1st, and North Carolina has secured a spot on that prestigious list. The Serbian phenom will visit Boston College, Utah, UConn, Duke, NC State, BYU, and finally, North Carolina. The inclusion of the Tar Heels in such an exclusive group signals Malone’s intent to compete for elite global talent immediately. Malone’s connection to Serbian basketball is well-documented from his time coaching Nikola Jokić with the Denver Nuggets, leading to speculation that he could leverage that background to lure Lukic to the ACC. However, the recruitment battle will not be easily won. North Carolina faces stiff competition from traditional powers like Duke and UConn, both of which are also on Lukic’s itinerary. The Tar Heels do have recent momentum on the international front; Malone successfully landed five-star Malian center Sayon Keita earlier this year, demonstrating his staff’s ability to close deals with high-profile foreign prospects. Landing Lukic would be a significant coup for Malone’s 2027 recruiting class, which already received a massive boost with the commitment of five-star guard DeMarcus Henry. While the coaching staff remains heavily involved with domestic five-star targets like C.J. Rosser, Lukic represents a potential alternative or complement on the wing. With his size, perimeter skills, and versatility, Lukic fits the modern prototype of a playmaking guard. As the November 1st visit date approaches, all eyes will be on whether Malone can work his international magic once again to bring the Serbian standout to Chapel Hill.
