Ivan Cleary Slams “Harsh and Unfair” Ban on Panthers Trainer Corey Bocking
Penrith Panthers head coach Ivan Cleary has spoken out strongly against the five-match suspension handed down to team trainer Corey Bocking, calling the decision “harsh and a little unfair.” The incident occurred during Penrith’s recent NRL match when Bocking unintentionally ran in front of Jayden Campbell as the Gold Coast Titans player prepared to take a goal kick.
The NRL’s Match Review Committee ruled that Bocking’s movement onto the field interfered with play, leading to his suspension. However, Cleary believes the ruling fails to take into account the accidental nature of the incident and the overall contribution of his staff.
“It was clearly not intentional,” Cleary told reporters. “Corey was doing his job, and it looked like an unfortunate accident. I think the punishment doesn’t really fit the situation. It feels a bit excessive.”
Cleary expressed concern not only for Bocking but also for the precedent this decision could set for other team staff members who operate under high-pressure game environments.
“These guys work incredibly hard behind the scenes,” Cleary added. “To see one of them sidelined for something like this is tough. We respect the rules, but there has to be some balance and understanding.”
The incident has sparked debate among NRL fans and analysts, with many agreeing that while officials must protect the integrity of play, intent and context should also be considered in disciplinary outcomes.
Despite the setback, Cleary and the Panthers remain focused on maintaining their strong form as they continue their push for another NRL title.
