Alabama is in mourning as it says goodbye to a woman whose life left an indelible mark not just on her home state, but on the hearts of all who knew her. Dr. Annette Nevin Shelby, beloved wife of former U.S. Senator Richard Shelby and a trailblazing scholar in her own right, has passed away at the age of 86, after a life defined by wisdom, strength, grace, and service. The couple shared an extraordinary 65 years of marriage, marked by deep love and mutual respect.
Dr. Shelby’s journey began humbly in rural Coffee County, Alabama—a place that shaped her grit and compassion. From those humble beginnings, she rose to become the first woman to earn tenure at Georgetown University’s prestigious McDonough School of Business, blazing a trail for generations of women in academia. Her voice and vision transformed classrooms, empowered students, and broke ceilings others once thought were made of steel.
U.S. Senator Katie Britt, also from Coffee County and one of those inspired by Dr. Shelby, spoke with deep emotion in tribute: “Dr. Shelby’s faith and confidence in another young woman from the Wiregrass changed what was possible for my life.”
That was the essence of Annette Shelby—her belief in others. Her impact reached far beyond lecture halls. She helped mold her husband into one of Alabama’s most powerful and respected public servants. “In large part, Richard Shelby was able to stand on the mountaintop as Alabama’s greatest statesman because he was married to Annette Nevin Shelby,” Senator Britt said.

Dr. Shelby is survived by her devoted husband Richard, sons Richard Jr. and Claude, daughter-in-law Lisa, and grandchildren Anna and William—each a living testament to her strength, grace, and enduring love.
