Derby County have suffered an injury blow with the news that Sam Szmodics is likely to miss Easter Monday’s game against Stoke City.
The 30-year-old was stretchered off on Thursday night during Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifying defeat to Czechia when he landed awkwardly after an aerial collision. Knocked unconscious, the forward was taken to hospital in Prague, where he remained overnight.
Szmodics has been discharged from hospital following his head injury and will now have a “short period of rest”, Derby County have said.

Szmodics has been discharged from hospital following his head injury and will now have a “short period of rest”, Derby County have said.
But concussion protocols mean he will likely sit out the Easter programme and miss the matches against Coventry on Good Friday and at home to the Potters on Easter Monday.
Derby said: “Sam Szmodics has been safely discharged from hospital and will now undertake a short period of rest following a nasty fall during the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier against Czechia.
“The Rams’ forward was transferred to hospital in Prague for further medical attention after being stretchered off the field with a head injury on Thursday evening, six minutes after coming on as a substitute during extra-time.
“Following examination and a period of observation, Szmodics has been discharged and will now return to the UK, where he will continue his recovery under the care of the Derby County and Republic of Ireland medical teams.”
Szmodics had earlier written on social media to thank the quick actions of the medical staff at the ground and to say that he was “on the mend”.
