Should the Jazz Reconsider Their Decision on Kyle Filipowski?
The Utah Jazz made headlines during the 2024 NBA Draft when they passed on selecting Kyle Filipowski, a highly skilled big man out of Duke. Known for his offensive versatility, high basketball IQ, and ability to stretch the floor, Filipowski had the tools to be a valuable piece for a rebuilding franchise. Now, just a year later, it’s fair to ask: should the Jazz reconsider their decision?
Filipowski, selected by the Utah Jazz but later traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, has shown flashes of real potential in Summer League and limited NBA action. His ability to shoot from the perimeter, make smart reads as a passer, and defend at a competent level makes him a rare commodity in today’s NBA, where stretch bigs are highly valued. For a team like the Jazz, who are still building around young talent like Keyonte George and Taylor Hendricks, Filipowski could have been a perfect complementary piece.
The concern for Utah is whether they undervalued Filipowski’s long-term upside in favor of short-term roster flexibility or other priorities. If he continues to develop in L.A., the Jazz might have to come to terms with letting a promising asset slip away. It wouldn’t be the first time a franchise regretted moving on from a young player too soon.
While hindsight is always 20/20, the Jazz should at least be reflecting on their evaluation process. If Filipowski becomes a reliable rotation player—or more—the missed opportunity could haunt a front office striving to build a contender in a loaded Western Conference. The Jazz don’t necessarily need to make drastic moves, but a serious internal review of the Filipowski decision may be both timely and necessary.
